Quick Ways to Add Good Nutrition and Exercise to Your Busy Life

We are all so very busy and finding extra time to take care of ourselves can be exhausting. Often times, we end up not doing anything at all. As busy women, we need the proper nutrition and exercise to support ourselves. Recently, I’ve been thinking about how I can better my health and add more exercise to my life. I was inspired by an interview with actress, Kate Walsh, who celebrated her 50th birthday last year. She has made a commitment to prioritize her self-care routine. Well, I decided I want to do the same thing. NO MORE EXCUSES!

Kate says doing the basics like drinking enough water, weight training, and getting a good night’s sleep are very important. I agree, but sometimes life sure can get in the way, can’t it? Here are some easy and quick ways to accomplish your goals of eating better and getting some good effective exercise in very little time:

  • Park at the end of a parking lot away from the place you’re going. This will force you to get some walking in. Be sure to walk at a swift rate to get your heart rate up.
  • Take the stairs. There’s also an added bonus of saving electricity by not taking the elevator.

Walking Stairs

  • Exercise while doing the dishes, laundry, or cleaning. Cleaning can be good exercise, but go the extra mile by doing heel lifts while doing dishes, or squats while doing the laundry.

Housework Exercise

  • Exercise while watching TV. Get on the floor and do some body weight exercises or sit on the edge of the couch and do some bicycles crunches or leg lifts.

Healthy Snacks

  • Pack some healthy snacks to take with you on the go. This eliminates the need to stop and grab something unhealthy when you inevitably get hungry.

Kate Walsh talked about the importance of getting enough protein in our diets. I didn’t realize until recently that more than 1 in 3 adults 50 and older are not getting the required amount of protein in their diets, which includes me. I was clueless that protein can rebuild muscle, help with your metabolism, and make you stronger.

Healthy Snacks

  • Along with the previous tip, prepare a week’s worth of snacks at one time. I’m a snacker, and this has been a life changer for me. Not only can I quickly grab a few things to take on the go, but helps to limit the amount of snacks I am eating and they are much healthier.
  • I’ve learned that if we want to live well and live longer, we must exercise! Studies show that even ten minutes of exercise makes a difference—so do something! A suggestion is turning on the music and dancing or taking up a physical activity you’ve always wanted to learn like dancing lessons. Making exercise fun is what’s going to keep me active. I love jumping on the trampoline with my grand kids or taking a walk with a friend to catch up. Doing two things at a time is a win in my book.
  • Break an unhealthy habit like staying up too late or snacking later in the evening. This can be done a little at a time, but after a few weeks, you will have started a new healthy habit.
  • How about taking a walk during your lunch time at work, or, if you sit at a computer all day, do some stretches, straighten your legs under the desk, and flex and point your toes.
  • We spend a lot of time waiting in line or in the car. While in line at the store try sucking in your abdomen and holding it for the count of 10. Do that several times to strengthen your abs. While sitting in the car do some shoulder lifts or head rolls.

As Kate pointed out, good health doesn’t have to be over-complicated. We can find simple ways to make it work, even with a busy lifestyle. I hope these suggestions help give you motivation to get started on a healthy way of life and help keep you on track, so you can accomplish your health goals.
