If I could go back in my life and do things over again, I would take better care of my body. Do any of you feel that way? I’ve been pretty healthy my whole life, but I think that was simply good luck because I can’t say it was because of the way I was eating. When I was younger, I ate a lot of carbs. Through the years, I’ve known what I should eat to stay healthy, but didn’t know the nitty gritty,like how many grams of protein I should eat in a day, for instance. According to dietary guidelines, the average adult weighing 150 pounds should eat around 54 grams of protein a day, but that could vary depending on your activity level, age, or if you have an illness. And did you know that according to new research from Abbott and the Ohio State University, more than 1 in 3 adults over the age of 50 aren’t getting the right amount of protein in their diet? (That would include me because I would rather eat carbs more than worry about how much protein I’m eating.)
Quality Protein is Important for Metabolism, Maintaining and Rebuilding Muscles and Weight Management
I have been reading a lot about how to better take care of myself, and if I can reverse the problems I’ve caused myself. Here are some tips I’ve learned:
- It’s important to space out your protein intake throughout the day.
- Not all protein is created equal. Eggs, Milk, Chicken, Beans are just a few great ones.
- Adults over 50 don’t process protein the same way as when they were younger.
- Protein helps you stay fuller longer so you don’t want to snack.
What I Am Doing to Get Enough Protein
I have started a new way of eating by lowering the amount of carbs I eat to include only healthy carbs, like whole grains and vegetables, and very limited sugar or white flour. I’m only eating good fats like avocados, olives, and nuts, and I’ve increased my good protein intake. I’ve also been walking several times a week and I am feeling amazing!
Snacking is always something I struggle with controlling. But, with an adequate amount of protein, I’ve noticed I’m not wanting to snack as often.
