Thrift Store Adventure

(I hope you don’t mind, but this post has an overabundance of photos.)

We have an obsession in our family.  I think a good obsession.  Shopping in thrift stores!  To me it’s the thrill of the hunt and saving money.  I have a routine I follow when I go because there are a lot of people who shop there who look for the same kinds of things I do, so it’s all about speed in my mind.  I go in the order of most importance for the things I want.  That will be different for everyone.  I’ve gotten to the point where I can scan the aisles pretty quickly, but I know there are times that I miss things.  If I have time I will slow down or go through for a second time.   Here’s my typical routine:

First, I take a peek into the collectible area.  Most every thrift store I’ve been to has one.  I am a vintage and collectible dealer so I look for a good deal there.  If something seems high in price check the date on the tag.  If it’s been sitting in the cabinet for a while they may lower the price for you. (“May” is the magic word.)

Utah, Mormon, Pioneer Scones

www.polkadotpoplars.comLately I’ve had a hankering for one of my favorite things, the Utah Scone (Also known as the Mormon scone and the Pioneer Scone.).  Now, if you’re not from Utah or know someone from Utah you probably have no idea what I’m talking about.  It’s not a baked biscuit type scone you would find in other places in the world, it’s a fried, totally delightful, sweet dough that puffs when you fry it. Kind of like a filled doughnut. There is usually a hollow center that a lot of people fill with butter, honey, syrups, honey butter, jams, etc.  Tonight I decided to make some to add with a layered salad for dinner.  Here’s the recipe: [Read more…]

I’m a human interest junkie.  I enjoy reality shows and reading biographies.  I love seeing how other’s live their lives and hearing their stories.  Don’t you?

Gray Hair, Wrinkles, and My Turkey Neck

Watching myself get older is not a fun process.  While I’m grateful for wisdom that only comes with age, for being healthy, for being in a place in my life that I really enjoy, and being proud of the children I raised and that are productive members of society, I don’t like the decline and loss my body is going through. What is with the jowls, the age spots, the thinning hair, arthritis, and the loss of skin tone?  The other day I was even asked if I was a senior citizen.  What!??? At that point I knew I had to do something.  While it’s somewhat comforting to know that everyone goes through the same things I sometimes  just wish I still had the appearance of my 21 year old self.

Picnic Caddy

A lot of our picnics and BBQ’s are impromptu and spur of the moment ideas.  We would grab our paper supplies and throw them in a grocery sack and off we’d go or we would take an arm load of supplies to the backyard and then when the wind would catch napkins, etc. it would be a constant chase around the yard.  Know the feeling?

I found this wooden tool box at the thrift store and decided it was the perfect size for a picnic supply caddy.

Today I’ve got a headache and I have no energy and all I want to do is sleep.  It’s days like today that a pity party could happen.  Why is it that days like today I just want to complain and focus on what I don’t have and what I wish I was better at?  Blah, blah, blah.

Quick, Easy, & Delicious Cornbread

Hi Everyone!

I love a good cornbread, especially a sweeter version.  It goes well with soup or salad and always takes me back to my youth when my mom would make it.
