I have 3 girls and with those 3 girls come lots and lots of ideas on how to decorate their room and the most important part to me is the bed; it’s the focal point of the room! I saw this cute headboard from one day on Pinterest and I thought I had to do it!
With a little help from my amazing hubby, who is so wonderful to put up with all my ideas, we came up with this.
I am so pleased with how it turned out I literally did a happy dance!
It’s so easy to do and you can put one together for a fraction of the cost of a Pottery Barn headboard!
First, I had some extra particle board around our garage and it worked perfectly! I had my husband draw out the design, (he is really good at making sure everything is lined up and even).
Then we cut it out.
We made ours 53 inches high and 39 inched wide.
Then I found some white canvas fabric at our goodwill store!
SCORE!
If you can’t find something like that at your thrift store I was thinking a drop cloth would work really well, too.
For the size of our headboard I used about 3 yards and had a little left over. It just depends on what size you make your headboard and if you want the back of it covered.
I couldn’t find any batting thick enough for what I had in mind so I used a 3 inch foam mattress from Home Depot. I placed the cut headboard on top and used that as my template to trace onto the foam and then used a serrated knife to cut it out. The foam only covers half the board. I didn’t want it to go all the way to the floor since no one would see it anyway. I did cover all the wood with fabric. Then I placed the foam on the fabric and then the board on the foam and started to staple the white fabric to the board.
Make sure you iron your fabric before you staple it to your board.
We got a little staple happy if you can’t tell.
(It also helps to have two hands to help pull the fabric tight and then to staple it.)
When you are going around the curves I pulled as hard as I could to get it smooth. You may have to go back and pull more and staple after your done to get a smooth finish on the front.
I purchased these upholstery nails at Walmart for .97! I used 3 boxes of them . They had different colors, too. It’s up to you what you want to use, but I like the silver with the white.
I went around the headboard and marked 1 inch spaces for my nails.
Then nailed them all around the board.
For the monogram, I went onto Microsoft Word and picked a font I liked to do the initials.
I made the middle letter size 700 and the 2 smaller letters size 500.
Then I adhered the pink fabric I was using onto an iron on adhesive. Then after I cut the letters out from the paper and traced them on the fabric.
(Make sure you use a pencil or fabric chalk to trace with; you don’t want people to see your markings!)
Then I cut out the fabric letters and removed the paper from the back of the adhesive and centered them on the headboard. I then ironed them onto the headboard.
I did this step last because I wanted to make sure the letters were actually centered. I was afraid if I ironed them on the fabric before stapling it to the board they would end up scattywompus.
The headboard actually is sitting on the floor. I didn’t mount it to the wall because the bed is holding it up really well.
I really am so happy with how it turned out and the best part is that my little girl loves it, too!
