Spooky Halloween Mirror

Hello Friends! I hope this finds you all well and happy! I know I’m pretty excited now that it’s Fall; I’m just not one who really likes the heat. My daughters and I are planning a fun, but spooky Halloween party and today I want to show you a fun prop I made for the party.

This mirror has something a little extra in it. Yikes! I don’t think I would want to look into a regular mirror and see this, but for Halloween it’s perfect especially in a creepy, dark, fog filled backyard. Hee, hee!

I started with an old large frame with glass that I found at the thrift store and spray painted it black. Sanding parts of it gave it a worn look. I then hunted for a vintage picture on line. I enlarged it and printed it out. The last step was the glass. I didn’t even clean it because I wanted it as old and creepy as I could get.

Using this mirror paint I found at Hobby Lobby (with coupon it was $5.00) I sprayed one side of the mirror and let dry. After a second coat of paint I let it dry for about 30 minutes. Using a scrubby sponge I gently rubbed away a section of paint in the middle to make a space for the face leaving specks of paint here and there. Then I used a piece of low grit sand paper and sanded sections of the mirror to create an aged look. Another trick is to spray water in sections before spray painting. The water drops will create the look of an old mirror once the paint and water have dried.

Next I applied a light coat of Mod Podge on the painted side of the glass. This will seal all your aging work in place. While it’s wet adhere the face that has been trimmed into place. I didn’t smooth out the wrinkles because it adds to the spookiness. Let dry. You are now ready to put it all back together. I added a piece of black poster board between the glass and back of the frame to make the picture darker, but that is optional.

Ta da! Done! I can’t wait to see the faces of the kids looking at it.
