When A Loved One Is Grieving

In the last few months I’ve had some conversations with friends and family about my grieving process after losing my son two and a half years ago.  I’ve learned that many don’t know what to do or say to someone who is grieving.  To be honest I really didn’t know myself before my loss, so I thought I would share my thoughts about this topic and what was comforting to me.

Thrift Store Adventure

(I hope you don’t mind, but this post has an overabundance of photos.)

We have an obsession in our family.  I think a good obsession.  Shopping in thrift stores!  To me it’s the thrill of the hunt and saving money.  I have a routine I follow when I go because there are a lot of people who shop there who look for the same kinds of things I do, so it’s all about speed in my mind.  I go in the order of most importance for the things I want.  That will be different for everyone.  I’ve gotten to the point where I can scan the aisles pretty quickly, but I know there are times that I miss things.  If I have time I will slow down or go through for a second time.   Here’s my typical routine:

First, I take a peek into the collectible area.  Most every thrift store I’ve been to has one.  I am a vintage and collectible dealer so I look for a good deal there.  If something seems high in price check the date on the tag.  If it’s been sitting in the cabinet for a while they may lower the price for you. (“May” is the magic word.)

www.polkadotpoplars.comLately I’ve had a hankering for one of my favorite things, the Utah Scone (Also known as the Mormon scone and the Pioneer Scone.).  Now, if you’re not from Utah or know someone from Utah you probably have no idea what I’m talking about.  It’s not a baked biscuit type scone you would find in other places in the world, it’s a fried, totally delightful, sweet dough that puffs when you fry it. Kind of like a filled doughnut. There is usually a hollow center that a lot of people fill with butter, honey, syrups, honey butter, jams, etc.  Tonight I decided to make some to add with a layered salad for dinner.  Here’s the recipe: [Read more…]
