Today we are talking about our favorite holiday movies and sharing a recipe or craft that reminds us of the movie. I have several favorites, but there’s one that I love and have to watch at least 2 or 3 times every Christmas and that’s “The Family Stone”.

I’m sure most of you are familiar with this delightful movie, but if you haven’t seen it it’s about a large family full of different personalities. The movie’s story is full of the ups and downs of life, but yet they manage to stay bonded and together. And, of course, it’s centered around the magic of Christmas. I don’t want to give too much away, but I highly recommend you seeing it.

During the movie there is a scene in the kitchen with a breakfast strata (layered casserole) that get’s spilled all over the place and a fight breaks out. The scene ends with laughter and some hurt feelings.

We have a few very favorite recipes in our family that are saved for special occasions like the holidays. One of them is our breakfast hash. Some people refer to this as a breakfast scramble.

eggs, bacon, and sausage scramble

This recipe isn’t exactly strata, but I bet it’s just as good and they are both for breakfast. Most of our Christmas’ have hash on the menu. It’s a tradition that we all get together for Christmas breakfast, so this is a big one for us.

Here’s how we make this scrumptious meal.

Breakfast Hash Ingredients

breakfast hash ingredients

  • 8 slices of bacon
  • 6 sausage links
  • 6 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1 cup of grated cheese
  • seasonings to taste
  • oil (optional)
  • Bacon and Sausage Gravy (optional)

Breakfast Hash Instructions

  • Start by frying on medium heat the bacon and sausage in a fry pan. Set on paper towels to drain and cool.
  • (If you want to keep the bacon and sausage drippings for gravy drain them into a bowl and set aside. Add 3 tablespoons of oil to the fry pan.
  • Add the potatoes to the fry pan and spread out into an even layer. Cook on medium high heat until cooked through and slightly brown turning half way through.

hash browns

  • While the potatoes are cooking scramble the eggs, salt, pepper, and milk together. Set aside.
  • Break up the bacon and cut the sausage links into small pieces.
  • Once the potatoes are cooked reduce the heat to medium low and add the meat and the egg mixture to the pan. Stir often to scramble the eggs and mix the ingredients together.

eggs and hashbrowns

  • Once the eggs are cooked through add the cheese and any additional seasonings you enjoy. Mix through. We add a seasoning salt and garlic powder.

cheesy breakfast

  • Optional – This is delicious topped with a breakfast gravy. Makes it even more healthy doesn’t it? You can either make your own from the drippings or use a gravy mix like pictured above.
  • Enjoy

I would love to hear what you eat for breakfast on Christmas. Let me know below.

This Christmas Cider would be a perfect addition to the hash.

Breakfast Hash

A filling and delicious breakfast recipe.

Course Breakfast
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 40 minutes
Author Dru

Ingredients

  • 8 slices bacon
  • 6 links sausage
  • 1 package frozen Potatoes O'Brien
  • 6 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • 3 Tbl. Oil
  • 1 package breakfast gravy optional

Instructions

  1. Cook bacon and sausage on medium heat in a fry pan. Drain on paper towels and let cool.

  2. Add potatoes to pan in an even layer and let cook through on medium high heat approximately 10-15 minutes. Turn half way through.

  3. While the potatoes are cooking whisk the eggs, milk, salt, and pepper. Set aside.

  4. Crumble the bacon and cut the sausage into smaller pieces.

  5. Once the potatoes are cooked lower the heat to medium low and add the meat and the egg mixture. Stir regularly until the eggs are scrambled and the ingredients are mixed through.

  6. Mix in the cheese and add seasonings to taste. We like to use a seasoning salt and garlic powder.

  7. If you want to make your own gravy drain the drippings from the pan after cooking the bacon and sausage. You will want to add approximately 3 Tbl. of oil to the pan instead of the drippings to cook the potatoes.

  8. (Optional) Topping with breakfast gravy gives it a great taste and adds some moisture. You can use a gravy mix like pictured.
