What kinds of things do you do on St. Patrick’s Day other than wearing green? Here’s a fun Leprechaun Hat craft that might help add a little magic to your day.
Every year in our family that pesky Leprechaun creates a few messes and leaves his footprints wherever he goes like on the toilet seat and the kitchen floor. He even leaves a little green kiss on the kid’s noses. It’s all in good fun and he loves to leave cute gifts, as well. This year I am making Leprechaun hats filled with rainbows, gold, and green goodness. It’s almost like that guy and his friends have left their hats behind to say “Have a fun-filled day”!
Here’s what I used. It doesn’t take much.
Leprechaun Hat Supplies
- Green card stock and other heavy papers
- Gold paper
- Glue gun
- Fun punch like a circle or square (optional)
- Adhesive shamrocks
- Ruler
- Scissors and paper cutter
Leprechaun Hat Instructions
- Start by measuring and cutting a 10.5″x5″ strip and glue the short ends together overlapping an inch to form a cylinder.
- Cut 1/2″ slits every 1/2″ around the top and bottom of the cylinder and fold them in.
- Laying one end of the cylinder on the paper draw around it. Cut it out and glue it to the top of the hat.
- Cut out a 4″ circle for the brim. I used a small bowl.
- Fill the hat with goodies.
- Add glue to the folded slits and center the brim to the bottom creating the hat.
- Cut a 1 1/2″ x 10″ strip of gold paper and glue it to the hat forming a hat band.
- (Optional) Using your decorative punch cut out your shape and attach a shamrock sticker to the front and glue in place on the front of the hat.
At this point you can add additional embellishments like feathers, trim, or buttons.
After a breakfast of Lucky Charms let the kids open the hats to see what’s inside.
I hope you have a quirky and fun St. Patrick’s Day!
(For the footprints we brush green paint on the side of our hand and stamp it down. Using your pinky tip add little toes.)

Leprechauns and mischief, a classic combo. Speaking of little green men, does anyone else find themselves cleaning up glitter bombs after St. Patrick’s Day? I once tried to build a miniature golf course for my nephew, and the tricky design required me to figure out angles and ramps similar to the challenge of getting the perfect Slope Unblocked hat brim, resulting in a hilarious, albeit frustrating, afternoon of cardboard and glue. This Leprechaun hat project is way more manageable! I wonder what treats I could hide inside for my own little rascals!
