Today our theme is Ornaments and I came up with an idea for a paper star that has a pocket to put a small treat into. They are so easy to make and would be cute hanging from a tree or made into an advent calendar and hanging from a light fixture like this.
I’m pretty happy with how this turned out. There are twelve stars. One side has a number from 1 – 12 and the other has a Christmas quote that can be used as a discussion piece for your family. Here’s what I did:
Christmas Advent Ornament Supplies
- lightweight cardstock
- bells and small ornaments
- chain, twine, or ribbon
- scissors
- sewing machine or glue
- ruler
- Xacto knife
Christmas Advent Ornament Instructions
- Print the stars using the attached pdf file.
Whether you want to make one or several ornaments you should be able to find options in these printables including a blank star.
- Next, cut out the stars.
- On the quote stars using an Xacto knife and a ruler cut a two inch slit above the wording in the center of the star. This will create the pocket for the goodie. Adjust the size, if needed, depending on what treat you are using.
- Put a number piece and any quote piece together back to back and either sew or glue the edges together. I used a sewing machine.
- Punch a hole in the top of the star and add a piece of ribbon, chain, or twine. I used chain for mine because I thought it would add more sparkle. If you will be hanging these on a Christmas tree you will want to loop the ribbon or twine for hanging.
- I added a small ornament to the top and a bell at the bottom. It’s fun to hear the ring when they are swaying.
- Add a small treat into the pocket hole.
(The smaller stars are just to add some variety.)
That’s it. Now your family will be able to take turns talking about the quote and eating the treats starting with number one on December 13th and finishing with number 12 on Christmas. As a bonus it kind of makes a beautiful, sparkling decoration for your home.
What are you favorite types of advents? There are so many varieties. I think they are all fun.
