Is there anything better than the smell of homemade bread? Well, maybe other than a lotion slathered baby or fresh rain, but it’s up there in the “smell good” department. Today I’m sharing the best bread recipe in my opinion and this one is almost foolproof.
Making bread is a skill everyone should have. It just tastes so good. Recently I decided that I would make bread with my grand kids and on this day it was this little girl’s turn.
I made this cute apron, hat, and oven mitt for her 5th birthday and it was time to try it out. Here’s what we did:
Best Bread Recipe Ingredients
We gathered all the ingredients. There’s not many.
- 2 Cups Milk
- 2 Cups Water
- 6 Tbl. Shortening
- 2 Tbl. Salt
- 10 Tbl. Sugar
- 2 Tbl. Yeast
- 1/4 Cup Water
- 10 Cups Flour (You can use any combination of white and wheat flour. I really like half wheat and half white.)
Best Bread Recipe Instructions
- In a large pan combine the milk, 2 cups water, shortening, salt, and sugar. Heat over medium high heat until the mixture starts steaming, not boiling. Stir occasionally. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.
- In a small bowl combine the yeast and 1/4 cup water. Let sit until milk mixture is cool.
- Combine the milk mixture and the yeast together. Gradually add flour 2 cups at a time and mix well. Eventually you won’t be able to stir it and will need to use your hands.
- Kneed the dough on a floured surface until the dough is slightly sticky, but elastic. Continue kneeding for about five minutes. (You may need to add up to a 1/2 cup more flour.)
- Place in a bowl to rise and cover with a slightly wet towel to keep the dough moist. The dough should triple in size. This will take about two hours.
- Once the dough has risen punch down and let rise again.
- Divide the dough in thirds and form into loaves.
- Grease or spray three bread pans and add the prepared dough. Let rise until triple in size.
- Bake in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
- Remove from oven and let rest for 10 minutes. You can butter the top, if desired.
- Remove loaves from pan and let cool.
- Enjoy!
And speaking of bread you will want to enter this $500 Amazon card giveaway. That’s a lot of dough!
