Succulents

Right now succulents are hugely popular.  I’ve had them in my gardens for years and they add a nice variety and uniqueness to your surroundings. Succulents include cactus and aloe vera plants.

Why Succulents?

  • They are ornamental.
  • They don’t require much maintenance.
  • They are very durable and are known to be indestructible.
  • They are perennial.
  • They attract insects that kill other plants keeping the other plants healthier.

To care for succulents simply water them during their growing season in the summer.  Don’t re-water until the soil has dried.  You won’t need to water them during their dormant season in the winter and you don’t want to over water.  They like bright light.

I recently picked up some plants to make a gift with.  I’ve had a hard time finding a large variety of succulents.  The garden nursery people tell me they’ve been flying off the shelves.  I’m hoping to find some others to add to this mix.

I simply took a large clay pot saucer and lightly spray painted it white and then sanded it off in places to show the red pot.  I drilled drainage holes in the bottom using a drill.

There is a special potting mix made especially for cactus and succulents.  I used this while planting.

Here’s a link to a wedding that used succulents to decorate with and for their florals.  Amazing!  Can I go back and do my wedding over?
