Kid’s Snowman Craft

I have to laugh every time I look at this photo of the burlap bag snowmen we made. Each one was made by a different person and they each have their own personality. We had a blast sitting around the table making them.

Snowmen in a row

From our experience this craft would be suitable for ages 5 and up with the younger ones needing a little help with gluing items on and making the snowman’s hat. We used a low temp glue gun and the older kids had no problems using it.

It’s such a thrill to watch the kids get so excited and see them get so into crafting. It made this crafty grammie happy.

Kid’s Snowman Craft Supplies

burlap bag snowman supplies

  • Any smaller burlap bags. I used 3×5″ bags supplied to me by I want to thank them for being so generous.
  • white acrylic paint
  • 3×5″ cardstock or cardboard
  • sponge brushes
  • google eyes
  • Sharpie marker
  • orange Sculpey clay
  • stretch cotton fabric
  • ribbon
  • glue gun and glue sticks
  • cotton stuffing
  • candy or small toys

Kid’s Snowman Craft Directions

  • Preheat your oven to 275 degrees. Give each child a small piece of the orange Sculpey clay and have them make the noses for their snowmen. Bake the noses on a baking sheet for 15 minutes to harden.

making snowman noses

  • While the noses are in the oven have each child insert the 3×5″ card inside the burlap bag. This will keep the paint from leaking through. Give everyone a sponge brush and some white paint and have them paint both sides of the burlap bag. (Be sure to put paper or plastic down on the table to keep it safe from paint.)

painting snowmen bags

  • While the paint is drying show the kids how to make the hats.
    • Cut a 7.5″x10″ piece of the stretch cotton fabric for each person.
    • Fold the fabric in half right sides together and lengthwise.

      • Glue the long edge closed forming a seam. Let dry.
      • Turn the fabric right sides out.

making a snowman hat

      • Cut a 12″ piece of ribbon and tie it about a third of the way down the the fabric tube. The fabric above the ribbon can be cut to the length they want.
      • On the opposite end fold up the edge twice and glue the folds into place.

making snowmen hats

  • When the bags are dry the kids can create the faces by gluing on the eyes, their baked noses, and drawing on mouths, eyebrows, buttons, etc. Let the kids make it their own.

  • Insert a piece of stuffing into the bags to create fullness and then they can add candy, treats, or toys inside.

Dru About Dru

There are so many things I could say but I will just start with the basics. Mother to 4. Grandmother to 11 (Yes, 11. All under the age of 9.) I am a former Army wife and we spent 15 years traveling around the world. It was such a thrill to have seen so many places and meeting lifetime friends. I spent many years working in the craft industry and love getting together with friends and creating. I have a lifelong love of thrift shops, antiques, and yard sales.

  1. These snowmen are the cutest. What a great way to use the bags and my kids love snowmen.

  2. What a fun project – such a creative way to use the burlap bags!

  3. I am in love with the burlap , such a creative holiday idea. They are all so cute.

  4. I love this kid project. There’s painting, gluing, drawing…all the things kids love to do. Pinned.

  5. What a great idea for a kids craft! My kids had so much fun making their own snowmen out of paper and buttons. They had a blast decorating them and it was a great activity to keep them entertained on a cold winter day. Thanks for sharing this fun craft!

  6. This is such an amazing and innovative artwork for the children who really love snowmen and want to meet them personally, but they are so innocent and didn’t know that this is a piece of imagination and fantasy that sets a great and interesting image throughout the world.

  7. The dangling drawstrings even take on the appearance of charming arms, adding an extra layer of character to each creation.
