I kept my Christmas tree pretty simple this year because in the old farmhouse days things were simple. That has been my goal the last several years is to simplify. I still have a long way to go, but it’s happening and it’s such a relief.

In keeping with the farmhouse theme I wanted a wood tree skirt and since I’m not going to pay an arm and a leg for one I decided to build it. I’m not a expert at all so kept it pretty simple and I like how it turned out. (There’s that “simple” word again.)

Wood Tree Skirt

Here’s how I made my DIY Wooden Christmas Tree Skirt:

Wooden Tree Skirt Supplies

Wood and tools

  • Four 2×2’s cut in 12 inch pieces
  • Eight 1×6’s cut in 24 inch pieces (I used pine picket which is less expensive and I like the rough look. You could also use cedar pickets which are lighter. Because these are fence pickets I didn’t use the rounded tops.)
  • 1 1/4″ nails (I used a nail gun, but you could just hammer the nails in, too.)
  • Wood Glue

Wooden Tree Skirt Directions

  • Lay two 2×2’s on the ground 24″ apart. Lay two pieces of picket on top making sure every edge is even. My 2×2’s were a little long because the pickets weren’t quite 6″ wide, so I made the extra 1/2″ legs.

wood pieces

  • Glue and nail the pickets to the 2×2’s.
  • Repeat with another set.
  • Turn the finished sections on their sides and glue and nail two pickets on the top. You may need extra hands for this.

making a wood box

  • Repeat on the other side.
  • Let dry.

That’s all there is to it. You could also have a home improvement store cut the wood for you which makes it more simple. The tree skirt could be stained or painted. There’s so many options.

I’m pretty happy with how the whole tree looks.

There are so many things I could say but I will just start with the basics. Mother to 4. Grandmother to 11 (Yes, 11. All under the age of 9.) I am a former Army wife and we spent 15 years traveling around the world. It was such a thrill to have seen so many places and meeting lifetime friends. I spent many years working in the craft industry and love getting together with friends and creating. I have a lifelong love of thrift shops, antiques, and yard sales.
