Upcycled Planter

I’ve paired up with a group of talented ladies to bring you a monthly Thrift Store Decor Upcycle Challenge. Each month we will create a new home decor piece from an item(s) we’ve found at a thrift store, yard sale, resale shop etc. There is no budget or specific theme so we are free to let our creativity run wild!

Today I’m sharing a flower planter idea using the stand of an old bird bath and an old galvanized wash basin that I found at a thrift store. The stand didn’t have the top part of it and I wasn’t sure what to do with it. After some thought I remembered I had the wash basin that might look kind of fun on it with some flowers planted in it.

Plant Stand

I spray painted the wash basin in a pretty blue color and sanded it to give it an aged look. I then stenciled some numbers on it just for fun. I drilled some drainage holes in the bottom of the basin around the edge. To keep the pot from being blown off I used E-6000 glue to attach the basin to the stand. This adhesive works on everything.

In the bottom of the pot I added a couple of inches of rock and then added potting soil and the flowers.

Planter Stand

I really kind of love it. It’s so funky, but fun, and it fits perfectly in my yard.

Galvanized Planter

An old bird bath stand and rugged galvanized wash basin make a fun planter.

Dru About Dru

There are so many things I could say but I will just start with the basics. Mother to 4. Grandmother to 11 (Yes, 11. All under the age of 9.) I am a former Army wife and we spent 15 years traveling around the world. It was such a thrill to have seen so many places and meeting lifetime friends. I spent many years working in the craft industry and love getting together with friends and creating. I have a lifelong love of thrift shops, antiques, and yard sales.

  1. I love this Dru! What an awesome upcycle. I love that it is sitting on top of a bird bath. I have a bird bath where the top fell and shattered so I will be thinking about doing something like this.

  2. This is awesome! Love the addition of the numbers. Great upcycle!

  3. Such a great idea Dru! I used to have a bird bath base that the top had broken long ago, but we got rid of it. Talk about regret!

  4. OMG I LOVE THIS! What a creative idea! It’s such a statement piece for the yard!

  5. Love the bird bath stand! Makes it unique.

  6. What a good idea to give the planter height and presence. And the color you sprayed the planter is so pretty. An excellent makeover.

  7. I absolutely love this idea! We have a bird bath and I worry about the bowl breaking. Now I know what I’ll do if that ever happens! I really like your lattice wall too!

  8. What a great do-it-yourself project! It’s a great concept, but I never would have considered transforming a window ac into a flower planter. It’s a fantastic way to green up your house and cut down on waste. Without a doubt, I’ll try this and report back to my fellow plant lovers on the outcome. I appreciate you sharing this fantastic upcycling concept!
